However, speed of deployment and security remain the biggest barriers to scaling AI.
Hong Kong, April 25, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AI is a top priority for CIOs, according to findings from Lenovo's 3rd Annual Global CIO Report. Inside the Tornado: How AI is Reshaping Corporate IT Today, CIOs urgently need to adopt and scale AI, but slow speed, security, and other organizational capabilities are slowing their adoption of AI. It became clear that the goal was threatened.
In stark contrast to the past, CIOs are taking on non-traditional responsibilities to strengthen their focus on core IT functions. Slightly more than half (51%) of CIOs feel that AI/ML is an urgent priority, matched only by cybersecurity. This urgency directly correlates to the pressure on his CIO to drive business impact rather than maintain and maintain operations. 84% of CIOs say they are being evaluated on business performance metrics more than ever before.
“Today's CIOs are working in a whirlwind of innovation. After years of IT expanding into non-traditional responsibilities, we'll explore how AI is bringing CIOs back to their core mission. “We are seeing this happen,” said Ken Wong, president of Lenovo's Solutions and Services Group. . “This is being driven by the clear promise of AI adoption and the pressure IT leaders face to prove the value of these investments and achieve measurable business outcomes.”
CIOs are optimistic about the impact of AI, with 80% feeling that breakthrough advances and developments in AI will have a significant impact on their business. At the same time, CIOs believe speed to deployment and security are the biggest barriers to scaling AI. The majority of organizations are not AI-ready, directly impacting IT's ability to scale AI quickly. Specifically, new product lines (78%), company policy/ethical use (76%), supply chain (74%), and IT technical skills (51%) were cited.
Consistent with the past few years is IT's continued challenge to measure impact. 61% of CIOs said they find it very or very difficult to demonstrate return on investment (ROI) on technology investments. Although 96% of CIOs expect their investments to increase over the next 12 months, 42% of respondents said they do not expect to see a positive ROI from their AI investments for at least two to three years. I admit that I haven't.
AI has a positive impact on sustainability
While sustainability remains a key element of the CIO's role, the picture is somewhat complicated by the fact that 38% of respondents admit that sustainability has become a lower priority as a result of resources being poured into AI implementation. It will be. Ultimately, CIOs believe that AI is a positive for sustainability, with 78% saying that leveraging AI will make it easier for their organizations to meet their IT sustainability goals.
Questions remain regarding human capital and financial resources
Although CIOs share optimism about IT departments' own AI readiness, continued investment in AI may create further shortages in human and financial resources. 89% of CIOs warn that the role of human capital will become even more important as AI technologies continue to expand. Given the anticipated budget constraints, increasing headcount to align with these AI goals can be difficult.
Similarly, while 96% of CIOs expect their investments in AI to increase over the next year, only 20% expect their overall IT budget to increase by more than 10%. CIOs believe that exploring and implementing AI will divert resources and attention from other key IT areas such as cloud adoption/digital transformation (48%), sustainability (38%), and employee compensation (38%). I acknowledge that it has been done.
“There is a clear opportunity for us to help companies understand and accelerate their scale of AI, and advise them on how to effectively measure the impact of these investments,” Wong added. “Our customers are already leveraging AI to power their sustainability, security, and digital transformation efforts. By developing a coherent implementation strategy that addresses CIO challenges, we are helping them achieve more We can help you achieve that.”
