The bathroom isn't necessarily the number one hangout area in your home, so it doesn't necessarily draw attention to your style (unless, of course, you love soaking in the bathtub!). But even if you're not a bath fan, it's worth spending a little more time designing your favorite bathroom. After all, the bathroom is the first thing you look at almost every morning and the last thing you look at every night.
Looking for inspiration for a makeover? There are many ways to transform a boring bathroom into a personal sanctuary, but designer and author Davito says there's one method that will surprise you. Dominant trends in bathroom renovations in 2024: Fun and funky custom patterns made with ceramic tiles.
2024's Biggest Trend: Creating Custom Ceramic Tile Patterns
The designs at Davito's Old Brand New studio are typically colorful, and in the past he has incorporated bold patterns into the bathrooms. But what twists is he seeing (and loving!) this year? Rather than buying ready-to-install tiles, the DIYer designed his patterns entirely.
“People are creating fun patterns with tiles,” he says. “It’s nice to see more maximalism in the mix.”
Previously, you may have seen bold patterns in mosaic-style tiles purchased and installed in sheets, or pre-glazed patterned tiles. But now we're increasingly seeing patterns created by DIYers by installing tiles of the same size in mixed colors.
Davito points out that this tile work is often done alongside colorful paintwork and playful sculptural sinks, as seen in the photo of the Kosovo designer's funky bathroom above. . But you don't have to be bold with every aspect of your bathroom redo to jump on this trend. The tiles themselves can be the centerpiece. “I use ceramic he tiles in different colors and sizes to create unique patterns,” Davito says of how he got into this trend. “Then we'll install it floor-to-ceiling or halfway up the wall.”
As for color combinations, that's also completely up to you. Make it look big with a bold contrast, or choose something more subtle, such as two shades of the same color. No matter how you approach this trend, you can create something completely unique to your home and style.
