Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram have integrated Meta AI into the search field of their mobile apps. And it's getting weird.
The search bar on the Facebook and Instagram apps is probably one of the places you're most familiar with. There, you've searched for a variety of information, including the names of people you went to high school with, local businesses looking for pages, and celebrities whose latest controversial posts have gone viral.
We all know what to expect from the search bar on Facebook or Instagram. Find people, pages, groups, tags, places, and more that already exist on Facebook and Instagram.

What's even weirder about the “Ask Meta AI anything” prompt in the Search tab is the list of suggestions it shows for your search. Mehta wisely recognized that most humans would be a little confused by his AI chatbot. Most people have never even intentionally interacted with an AI. Pew reports that as of March 2024, only 23% of U.S. adults have tried ChatGPT, and 34% have never even heard of it.

A Meta representative said these suggestions are subject to change based on popular searches. This may explain at least one surprising search suggestion I got: “Rick Lax net worth.” (Rick Lax is the magician behind a lot of Facebook viral content and is mostly popular only on his Facebook.)
On Instagram, search suggestions are a little more Instagram-y, like “5 tips for glowing skin,” “cheerleading reel,” and “write a spring fashion guide.” Requests for cheerleading reels lead to suggestions for many other reels.
When we asked Meta AI if there was a difference between the AI used by Facebook and Instagram, they said, “The core LLaMA 3 model is the same, but its application and fine-tuning is different for Instagram and Facebook.” It's different.'' Platform-specific requirements and user experience. ” A Meta representative declined to answer questions about whether this is accurate.
What's strangest to me isn't whether Llama 3 is “good” at answering these questions, but whether it's significantly better or worse than other competing AIs. It works, but the best part is that the output is fast, it's free, and it's inside an app you already use a lot.
And if Meta's goal here is to start instilling the idea of using generative AI in people without having to download another app or come up with an idea of what to ask the AI, then the mission has been achieved.
This is part of Meta's efforts in the AI arms race, with more computing power. Meta also has the advantage of getting LLM into the hands of as many users as possible to try it out. Meta has a lot of people who open the app and search in the search bar every day.
So, yes, it feels really weird and confusing to shove Meta AI into the search bar, but Meta is trying to push new features to users in order to get them adopted by the necessary number of users. Don't be shy about forcing it (even if users complain).cough reel cough).
But for us gremlins who are used to searching for old flames, new acquaintances, celebrities, and other embarrassing things in Instagram's search bar, this is certainly a strange new world.
