UPDATE – TEA conservators Michael Hinojosa and Andrew Kim today addressed the public as they launch efforts to assist with issues within SISD.
Hinojosa and Kim, both former superintendents, talked about a deficit of more than $33 million, which ABC-7 reported could increase into the 2024-2025 school year.
“It's not linear. It's doable to fix these systems within these finances. It's just a matter of making difficult decisions,” said Hinojosa, SISD's appointed chief conservator. Stated.
Asked about where the multi-million dollar deficit came from, Kim said: “This is a long, long process. It's not one decision, there were many decisions.”
Hinojosa said the deficit is decreasing and there are moves by the district to improve the situation.
TEA Deputy Secretary for Governance Steve Recholop noted the recent arrests of two SISD board members.
“It would be too early to make any decisions or assumptions about what happened or how the authorities will respond,” Lecholop said.
Conservators also said they could not comment on the matter.
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — Remediators appointed by the Texas Education Agency have arrived and are working with the Socorro Independent School District.
ABC-7 reported in April that the TEA had appointed two conservators to address a series of issues within the district.
The conservatorship was approved by the district in March 2024 after a vote by the SISD Board of Education.
Conservators will speak to the media and public Wednesday at 5 p.m., and a board meeting will be held later in the evening. ABC-7 will have complete coverage throughout the night.
