Nashville, Tennessee – Today, the Tennessee Department of Education is highlighting multiple pathways available to support third and fourth grade students who may benefit from additional academic support. Additionally, new and updated resources are available to help districts and schools work with families to determine the best career path for students.
“As school districts and schools begin to have important conversations with families of students who are still at low proficiency levels, we will continue to provide resources and support to help families make informed decisions about their students’ education.” said Education Secretary Lisette Reynolds. “We appreciate the dedication of Tennessee’s school districts, schools, and educators in providing families and students with the best path to future success.”
In 2021, Governor Lee and the Tennessee General Assembly passed two important pieces of legislation to ensure all students have the support they need to read and perform at grade level. Her third-graders who score “near expectations” or “below expectations” on the English Language Arts (ELA) section of the TCAP assessment will receive a free gift from the school to ensure they are ready to move on to fourth grade. Get essential learning support. This includes the opportunity to retake the TCAP, free summer camp, and/or tutoring in the next school year.
Additionally, the law was changed this year to give families of fourth-graders who participate in free summer camps or tutoring an additional pathway to fifth grade.
