- Spotify has launched AI Playlists, a new feature that creates playlists that include text or emoji prompts.
- This feature is in beta mode and is currently only available in the UK and Australia.
- I think this is the coolest feature to come out of Spotify since their year-end “Wrapped” roundup.
I've always been a big music geek and started DJing as a hobby a few years ago.
So when I saw Spotify released a beta version of AI playlists for premium users in the UK and Australia this week, I was excited to learn it could save me time creating playlists.
I've spent countless hours on Spotify discovering new music and carefully curating my playlists. But creating something different for each genre, something that works well in a mix, and something that soundtracks almost any mood or situation takes time.
I tried out this new feature to see how easy and fast it is and if it suits my musical tastes. The situation is as follows.
How to use
Once you open the Spotify app, tap on “Your Library” and the “+” button. In addition, his three features include “Playlist'' to create your own playlist, “Blend'' to create a shared playlist with friends, and “AI Playlist'' to “transform ideas into playlists using AI.'' Options will be displayed.
[AI プレイリスト]Tap to display a text box where you can enter just an emoji.
You can create a playlist of 30 songs in less than 5 seconds based on what you might like. To edit your list, swipe left to remove songs, then tap Create to save your playlist.
Created 10 playlists in under 1 minute
In a press release announcing the feature, Spotify said users can use prompts that reference “locations, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and even emojis.” So I did just that.
I typed in a bunch of text prompts to see what would happen. First, we wanted to see how well you respond to emojis, and whether you can identify mood and themed playlists that reflect that. I told the tool to base it on the emoji of a face holding back tears.
Within seconds, a playlist called “Resonant Emotions” was created “filled with emotionally moving tracks” from famous artists such as Adele, Hozier and Amy Winehouse.
I then gave them the prompt, “Create a minimalist, high-tech playlist featuring artists you've never discovered before.” It compiled a list of songs I had never heard before, but once I played them, I fell in love with them.
So I asked for a playlist based on the mood of Joseph Cooper, the main character in the movie Interstellar. And sure enough, it worked. It produced a song called “Cooper's Essence.” This included some fantastic tracks and a few songs that felt a little outside of the prompts I had entered.
I also wanted to create a song that was “based on a lion vibe,” which included a lot of songs that felt empowering to me. You can also adjust your playlist using another prompt, so I typed it to remove hip-hop songs. Oddly, the response was, “Let's make it inclusive instead. Try something different.”
It's still in beta so it's not complete. For the most part, this feature worked well in terms of finding songs based on a short description of what I was looking for.
No offensive playlists will be created
It also incorporates several safety devices to prevent possible misuse. As Spotify says in a press release, “We're also taking steps when it comes to offensive prompts, so please prompt responsibly.”
I decided to test the effectiveness of these measures. When I told them to make a “white power” playlist, they said the topic was “useless.”
When we asked them to write songs about diversity, equity, and inclusion, they included songs like Lady Gaga's “Born This Way” and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's “Same Love.” I was there.
Here are some of the other prompts I used to generate playlists:
-
Please create something based on the atmosphere of Sardinia, Italy.
-
When you're feeling introspective
-
To get you in the mood for training
-
based on yellow
-
please help me concentrate
-
Prepare to go out
it's a game changer
Overall, I think this is the coolest feature to come out of Spotify since Wrapped, which looked at the breakdown of users' listening habits at the end of the year.
AI playlists are a great way to save time when you want to create a last-minute playlist for an event or while traveling.
And even though it takes a lot of effort to discover new artists and songs you like, you still create your own playlists full of songs you discover.
