SYDNEY, June 06, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — SYDNEY, NSW —
SYDNEY, Australia — Google recently launched an experiment that could affect, for better or worse, the amount of traffic businesses get from organic and paid search.
The search engine is testing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to help people find reliable, summarized information faster in a Google search, in just a split second.
Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) is being piloted in over 120 countries and will be rolling out in Australia later this year.
As part of the experiment, Google has integrated artificial intelligence into its search engine.
When a user searches for a topic, the AI creates an easy-to-understand summary at the top of the search engine results page, based on information from multiple websites displayed in a prominent sources panel next to the summary. The experiment also has a conversational element, with Google suggesting follow-up queries to help users understand the topic better.
While Google SGE is expected to make it easier for consumers to search, digital marketing experts speculate that there may also be downsides for online businesses.
Sam Shetty, CEO of Sydney-based SEO agency E-Web Marketing, said the Google snippet box answers simple queries so well that internet users may not need to click through to an indexed website.
“When internet users can find all the information they need from Google's snippet box, indexed websites may see a drop in traffic as fewer people click on them,” Shetty said.
“That said, this experiment is still in its early stages, so it remains to be seen what impact Google SGE will have on businesses' online visibility.”
In fact, Shetty says that businesses who have optimized their websites for SEO can benefit from increased traffic from Google SGE, especially when it comes to influencing leads for advanced search queries.
“Once the experiment launches in Australia, companies should strive to have their websites featured in a prominent source panel as internet users tend to visit such pages for complex queries that cannot be comprehensively answered by AI-generated snippets,” Shetty said.
“As you prepare for the release of Google SGE, we encourage you to prioritize creating engaging, accessible content that is relevant to your audience's specific needs.”

E-Web Marketing recently published an article titled, “What is Google SGE?”, which explains what Australian business owners can expect when the experiment launches in Australia.
In this article, we explain whether it is safe to trust Google SGE for accurate information, which is especially important for complex medical, financial and legal searches. Interested readers will also find that the technical features of the experiment are explained in a way that is easy to understand even for those without an IT background.
