one spring, 2024. Draw on rice paper and use pigments. 57 inches x 59 inches.
(Hackensack, NJ) — Seo Mi Ra will hold a solo exhibition titled “Exploring on New Paper.” riverside gallery The preview will be held on Monday, May 6th from 5pm to 7pm. Seo creates paintings that are often layered and quilted and involve subconscious and repetitive mark-making that resembles memory, emotion, and meditation.
Seo uses materials such as traditional Korean rice paper, fabric, and paintings on top of each other to create complex, multidimensional visual poetry. The repetition of marks in paint reminds us of letters and inscriptions that were intended to be written. The result is a meditative practice of automatic and unconscious movements, resulting in a textual arrangement of marks. The artist created a painting that conveys dynamic movement, a sense of place, or legibility with a central point, unlike some Abstract Expressionist paintings that continue indefinitely from the edge of the canvas to the edge of the canvas. I often layer large brush strokes or collaged elements into my compositions. The idea of the center. The vertical dimensions of some quilted or collaged paintings are reminiscent of ancient or traditional Korean painting scrolls. This means that the artist places paintings within paintings as a multi-layered mechanism, as a continuous metaphor between reality and fantasy. Or space.
Seo Mi Ra was born in Gwangju, South Korea and received her master's degree from Chonnam University. She is active as a painter and has won numerous awards for her work. In 2011 she won the grand prize of the 13th New World Art Award, and in 2013 she won the 12th Oh Ji-ho Art Award. Recently, Mr. Xu was invited to participate in the “AHL Foundation's Program: Art at Work” in cooperation with the bank. Hope for New York. She was also selected for the Beijing Art Residency sponsored by the Gwangju Museum of Art. “The act of dotting the work is actually a process of freeing oneself from the desire to consciously express something by simply concentrating on the pure act itself.” Seo Mira explained. “Unlike the expression of a brushstroke, which carries the weight of intention, the repetition of dots has its own meaning. I spend hours filling in the dots, and as I do this, I add new marks to them, which feels like a meditative performance. Every piece I create feels like the most monotonous and peaceful canvas compared to my previous works. I think the stillness gives me peace, away from trying to control or understand myself. The process of creating a piece of work is like opening a new piece of paper and having a dialogue with your inner self, and walking on a creative path.”
