Brad Pitt's yet-to-be-named F1 movie is expected to be one of the most expensive films ever made, according to a report in a Hollywood publication.
The 2021 film will be produced by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski and will co-star Brad Pitt and Damson Idris in a fictional F1 story.
Brad Pitt's F1 movie is expensive to make
According to leading American Hollywood-focused publication Puck, the untitled F1 movie's budget has ballooned to more than $300 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made.
The film follows a fictional F1 driver named Sonny Hayes, played by Bitt, who comes out of retirement to help coach Joshua Pearce, played by Idris.
The cast also includes Tobias Menzies, Kelly Condon, Javier Bardem, and Lewis Hamilton. The project began in 2021 and was produced for Apple, but the film's name, distributor, and release date have not yet been decided.
According to the report, there are several reasons why this film is set to be one of the most expensive films ever made. With a production cost of over $300 million, it ranks just outside the top 10 most expensive films of all time, tied for 11th place. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Justice League, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Costs are said to have skyrocketed because production began just before the SAG-AFTRA strike began causing costs to increase significantly.
Plus, this production features real actors in real race cars. Although this was not actually the case, as Pitt was seen driving a modified F2 APXGP car for 'his team' provided by Mercedes during the F1 race weekend at last year's British Grand Prix session.
Rising costs also suggest the film may face tough challenges making a profit, especially given the niche subject matter of F1.
The Hollywood-focused publication puts a film's break-even point at 2 to 2.5 times its budget. This means it would need at least $600 million in box office revenue to break even, and it's likely he'll make between $750 million and $900 million.
