BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Investigators need more time to gather information before filing charges in the deaths of two young brothers. Death due to suspected drunk driving Michigan prosecutors said Monday at a child's weekend birthday party.
Monroe County Prosecutor Jeff Yawkey said in a brief statement Tuesday that he “plans to make a charging decision.”
“We appreciate the public's patience and know that they understand how important it is to have all the information in front of them before making such an important decision,” Yawkey said. Ta.
A 66-year-old woman crashed her car into the Swan Creek Boat Club in Berlin, killing 8-year-old Alana Phillips and her 5-year-old brother Zane Phillips during a birthday party attended by children and adults on Saturday. Officials say it's 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Detroit.
The nine injured people taken to the hospital included the mother and another sibling, according to a crowdfunding page set up to support the Flat Rock School District and family. That's what it means.
The sheriff's office announced Monday that five people were listed in serious or critical condition.
Authorities did not say who the birthday party was honoring. The bar where the driver was believed to have been drinking was temporarily closed, but reopened on Sunday.
Counselors at Flat Rock schools were on hand Monday to help students and staff cope with what happened.
“Words cannot adequately express the depth of our grief, nor can they ease the pain of those who are grieving,” Superintendent Andrew Brody said on Facebook.
