A cyber attack on the Solano County Library System occurred this month, raising concerns about a data breach affecting the St. Helena Public Library.
The library is a member of the Solano Partner Libraries and St. Helena Network (SPLASH). Hackers disrupted the Solano County Library's public internet access and internal records management and demanded a $100,000 ransom.
They threatened to release the stolen data unless a ransom was paid.
But city officials announced Tuesday that there was no data breach at St. Helena Library.
According to a press release, “The data services company used by St. Helena Public Library investigated this attack and examined all data stored for the library.” “We found no information indicating that any data was compromised, and our threat detection systems did not detect any intrusions.”
St. Helena Library uses a separate cloud-based system for library data, and that system was not directly affected by the attack.
City officials were investigating whether there was a data breach.
“The multi-layered security used by St. Helena Public Library worked well in this situation,” Interim Library Director Melinda Cervantes said in a press release.
“Library staff and the city team will continue to take best measures to protect data. In this case, the system's required authentication processes, multiple firewalls, etc. were tested and passed.”
