A beauty guru praised her grandmother for using a DIY recipe to transform her hair to prevent it from going gray.
They were so impressed with how their homemade hair care products kept their hair smooth that they stopped using conditioner.
A now-deleted Reddit user took to an Indian skincare junkie forum and revealed a beauty hack she learned about two years ago.
“I sat down with grandmothers on both sides and found the holy grail of oil,” they wrote on Reddit.
“To put it in perspective, both of my grandmothers had dark, uncolored hair and no gray hair until they were in their 60s.
“I've been using it for a year, and my hair has become smoother with continued use.
“I stopped using conditioner this winter, so I don't have much dandruff.”
They shared the ingredient list for their hair care products, which includes several cold-pressed oils.
1 cup castor oil, 1 cup coconut oil, 1/2 cup olive oil, 1 cup sesame oil.
The list was followed by 1-2 tablespoons of groundnut oil, 1/3 cup of amla oil, 1/8 cup of almond oil, and 10 drops of either eucalyptus, peppermint, or tea tree essential oil.

It is also recommended to add washed vetiver root and dry amla powder, rose petals, a handful of brinraj leaves or powder, a handful of fresh curry leaves and a tablespoon of methi seeds.
“Heat 0.5 cup of coconut and 0.5 cup of sesame oil together, add methi seeds and curry leaves, and fry until the curry leaves are dry,” they said.
“Please cool down
“Place the vetiver root in a glass jar and add all the oils, including the curry oil.
“Then add all the dry ingredients.”
They recommended leaving the mixture in the sun for at least a week before using it.
They warned that only dry ingredients should remain in the final mixture and that it should be shaken well before use.
“If you can't find pure amla oil, add amla powder to hot oil (coconut/sesame),” they said.
“It takes less than 10 minutes to make the oils, and you can order them all on Amazon.”
Dabur Amla Hair Oil is priced at $13.69 on Amazon and was purchased by over 1,000 customers in the past month.
Vetiver root costs $15 and a bag of dried curry leaves costs $4.20.
“I heat the oil to a tolerable temperature, apply it to my hair, leave it on for 6 hours and wash it off,” said a Reddit user.
“If my hair feels dry, I apply oil at least once a week. I use baby shampoo so I wash it twice.”
The post received a flurry of responses from people thanking the hairdresser for sharing the recipe, and others saying their family members have used similar DIY treatments.
One person wrote: “Curry leaves reversed the graying of almost 40% of my hair as a teenager.”
“I used to boil curry leaves in coconut oil and apply it on my skin, but after almost a year, I didn't have a single gray hair.''

“Nice recipe OP!” said another.
“Curry leaves are a game changer. I've been taking them orally mixed with curd and I'm seeing baby hairs growing along my hairline.”
“This is amazing,” said a third person.
“I'll try this. Also, what do you mean by using only dry ingredients in the final oil mixture? Should I strain out the seeds, roots, and leaves after a week?”
“There should be no moisture in the leaves, seeds, petals, or roots, not just the final oil,” the original poster replied.
“This will keep the oil good for six months.”
According to Healthline, curry leaves are “rich in important nutrients,” and many people swear by them for their hair health.
However, there is a lack of scientific research to support claims that they are beneficial.
A small study examining amla oil has shown that it promotes hair growth in animals, but more research is needed to know the results for humans.
