Motherboards are objectively the most difficult, complex, important, powerful, boring It's a component of any PC build, but it's also one that's seen little evolution in recent years. But as revealed at Computex 2024, leading PC and gaming hardware manufacturer MSI is looking to change all that with “PROJECT ZERO.”
MSI has taken a top-down approach to what's possible for the next generation of PC motherboards, unveiling a future-proof design full of ideas to make your next PC build more convenient, easier to use, and (most importantly for me) more beautiful.
Finally, PROJECT ZERO began with MSI moving the power supply, CPU power, fan pins, SATA, and other interfaces to the rear of the motherboard for a cleaner overall look. This move created a need for smaller, more efficient components so as not to add excess bulk to the new design.
For example, the MSI Z790 PROJECT ZERO PLUS supports CAMM2 memory modules that save space by sitting as a single module that sits flat against the motherboard. This not only saves space and creates a cleaner look, but also improves stability, reduces latency, and allows for easier upgrades or side-grading with other CAMM2-enabled devices. The MSI Z790 PROJECT ZERO PLUS is packed with next-gen-ready features, including ultra-fast Gen 5 PCIe, extended heatsink, Wi-Fi 7, and DDR5 memory support.
Other new motherboard concepts and features manufacturers showed off at Computex 2024 included easier PCIe connect and disconnect, quick antenna connections, and mechanisms for tool-less SSD installation, all of which should make new builds and upgrades on future rigs that much easier, making the idea of a DIY PC build that much more appealing and attainable for everyone.
MSI's new M.2 XPANDER-AERO SLIDER GEN 5 PCIe add-on card is particularly appealing, providing a way to install or replace an M.2 SSD directly from the back of your PC, without having to open it up or remove the card itself.
