BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – It's Teacher Appreciation Week. Kelley Graffam from Penquis Family Enrichment Services stopped by the WABI TV5 studio to thank all the teachers and educators who make Early Head Start and Head Start, along with other child care programs, possible.
Penkiss is proud to celebrate all teachers, especially those serving Penobscot, Piscataquis and Knox counties, Penkiss' three-county service area. Early childhood education is essential for intellectual and social development. Receiving early education helps children develop social skills, promotes brain development, builds independence and self-esteem, fosters creativity, and enhances a child's overall physical and mental health. .
Penkiss provides high quality early childhood education in all classrooms. Penquis serves a wide range of ages in the Early Head Start program, from infants as young as six weeks to toddlers as young as three years old. Her Head Start program serves preschoolers from ages 3 to 5, and her PreK partnership, which prepares her for kindergarten success, serves 4-year-olds.
Penkiss faculty hold college degrees and are provided with at least 40 hours of professional development each year. Additionally, research-based curriculum is being implemented in Early Head Start, Head Start, PreK Collaborative, and Childcare. When a child enrolls in a Penkis classroom or childcare program, Penkis staff connects parents with community resources, helps families identify and achieve their goals, and prepares children for success in school and in the future. Services provided to children enrolled in these programs include individualized attention to developmental goals, health and dental screenings, school readiness, nutritional education, parent support, training and workshops, and special This includes services for children in need of support.
