A motorcyclist is suspected of fatally shooting another motorist on Highway 10 eastbound in Covina early Saturday morning, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol troopers responded to an area of the freeway near the Via Verde exit around 2:16 a.m., said CHP Trooper Sean Ruff. When he arrived, he said he found a person shot inside a white Chevrolet Camaro on the right shoulder of the highway.
A 19-year-old passenger was also in the vehicle, but was not struck by gunfire, CHP Sgt. Dan Keene.
Keene said the victim managed to pull over after being shot multiple times by the motorcycle. Police arrived within seven minutes and, despite administering life-saving measures, were unable to revive him.
Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics later pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Late Saturday, the victim was identified by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner's Office as 19-year-old Alexander Espino.
Investigators could only describe the gunman as a man wearing a black helmet, all black clothing, and riding a black motorcycle.
Video from the scene shows what appears to be a bullet hole in the Camaro's windshield.
Authorities closed all eastbound lanes of Highway 10 near the Via Verde Street exit for nearly four hours, with traffic being diverted off the highway at Holt Street and the closure ending just before 8 a.m.
