Celebrities descended on New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night for the annual Met Gala. This extravagant event raises funds for the museum's Costume Institute. Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth co-chaired the event along with Anna Wintour.
This year's dress code was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard's 1962 dystopian short story of the same name. The leading figures came dressed in costumes rich in floral and botanical motifs and creative depictions of decay and ruin.
Designer Harris Reid walked the carpet with Demi Moore and revealed that her dress took 11,000 hours of silk embroidery and was made from vintage wallpaper. “This Victorian idea is that it basically blooms on a carpet and is covered in these thorns…this gorgeous flower at the perfect moment of bloom.”
Meanwhile, Lana Del Rey's custom Alexander McQueen dress evokes a lush garden, with hand-embroidered thorny bronze branches inspired by artist Alberto Giacometti's sculptures. It crawled up to form a headpiece of tulle draped like a spider's web.
The sleeves of Elle Fanning's sheer Balmain gown appear to have been drawn in by birds and are made of resin for a glass-like effect. Janelle Monáe's shell-sequin dress and Greta Lee's transparent lace dress also nod to the delicate nature of the flowers in the story.
For men who prefer a bold take on the evening, there's model Wisdom Kaye, whose head-to-toe red floral ensemble looked sizzling along the edges, or model Wisdom Kaye, who wore a bespoke outfit by Maison Margiela and a dramatic hat. Bad Bunny was included. Meanwhile, Jeff Goldblum played the role of the story's Count, adding a touch of Oz (he will star in Wicked later this year) by accessorizing with dark green-tinted sunglasses.
