Mercedes will meet the stewards in Miami after sprint qualifying after an apparent team error on Lewis Hamilton's side of the garage.
Stewards were busy in the hours following sprint qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix, when Mercedes was summoned before them for an alleged violation of regulations.
Mercedes receives steward summons over Lewis Hamilton incident
During SQ2, when Hamilton pitted for new tires, the Mercedes team members did not appear to be wearing helmets while working on the W15.
As a result, he was summoned under Article 34.13 of the F1 FIA Sporting Regulations: “Team staff did not wear helmets during pit stop at 4:55 p.m.''
Mercedes team representatives were called to appear before the stewards at 18:10 Miami time, or 23:10 British time.
Hamilton and George Russell were both eliminated from SQ2, capping off a subdued day for Mercedes. Russell finished 11th, just ahead of Hamilton, who was 12th.
Hamilton made a small mistake during the sprint qualifying session by hitting the wall on the exit of Turn 16, ultimately missing out on advancing to SQ3 by less than half a second.
“I didn't get anything,” Hamilton said over the radio after leaving the session to decide the grid order for Saturday's sprint race.
Hamilton could be seen sadly getting out of his Mercedes and shaking his head as he walked through the garage.
“The car felt really good in FP1 and I was happy with the balance,” Hamilton said after the session.
“Unfortunately, during the sprint qualifying, the balance changed and the car fell back. We almost made it to SQ3, but we were able to move into the top ranks quite a bit.
“The sprint from 12th will be tough for us. It’s not an easy circuit to chase or overtake, so I don’t have high expectations from there. I will do my best.”
The W15 has some new updates at Miami this weekend, with a newly upgraded floor body to improve airflow to the rear of the car and the diffuser.
As well as Hamilton, stewards also summoned Oscar Piastri and Valtteri Bottas over a collision between the two after the Sauber driver swerved into an oncoming McLaren at Turn 1 during SQ1. The verdict is still out.
