AUGUSTA, Ga. – A day after setting a tournament record at the Masters, Tiger Woods set a new career low.
Woods clearly faltered after 23 holes at Augusta National on Friday, posting a career-worst score of 82 on Saturday and falling off the leaderboard.
This round was his lowest score in a major as a professional. Prior to Saturday, his previous best round at the Masters was a 78 in back-to-back rounds in 2022.
“My hitting and putting weren't very good,” Woods said during a short scrum with reporters. “I didn't have a very good warm-up session, so I stuck with that all day today. Just hit the ball in all the places you know not to hit the ball.”
This is Woods' third shot at a major in the '80s, and the first since the 2015 U.S. Open, when he was dealing with the first wave of back-related issues. His highest score ever in a major was at the 1995 U.S. Open, where he shot an 85 in the second round as an amateur.
Woods' hips appeared to be the limiting factor again Saturday, as he struggled with mobility and hit only five fairways and eight greens. Asked if there was a specific swing or moment that triggered the problem, he said, “All day long.”
He was out for 42 and returned home for five more bogeys. He finished the third round with an 11-over 227, tied for 52nd place.
Woods finishes the second round with a 72 in windy conditions. Achieved a record 24 times at the Masters.th continuous time, breaking away from a tie with Fred Couples and Gary Player. But Woods, who had been playing in slow to early waves, returned early Friday morning to continue the first round, then after less than an hour's break, played the second round in some of the most difficult conditions for the Masters veteran. I needed to get back on track. Reminiscence.
It was a difficult task for the 48-year-old, who was already in constant discomfort.
“Oh, yeah,” he said when asked about the toll Friday took on him. “It happened.”
Saturday was Woods' fourth full competitive round of the year after dropping out of the second round at the Genesis Invitational in February. Woods has not completed all four rounds in an official tournament for the first time in 14 months, but vowed to return on Sunday.
“The team will be ready,” he said. “It's going to be a long night and a long warm-up session, but we'll be ready.”
