ORONO – The University of Maine College of Education and Human Development, the state’s largest teacher preparation program, will hold its annual education career fair at the Wells Conference Center on Friday, April 5 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The event will allow the university's education graduates to meet with representatives from dozens of school districts and other Maine employers.
Nearly 50 employers have registered for the fair, including school districts, early childcare centers, public charter schools and the Maine Department of Education across the state. The number of participating employers is the largest in the event's six-year history.
Maine is experiencing a significant shortage of qualified teachers and is experiencing an increased demand for educational technicians, substitute teachers, and other professionals who serve students from preschool through 12th grade. This is behind the increase in participants. Graduates of Maine's state and nationally accredited teacher preparation programs are automatically recommended for Maine teacher certification in key areas such as mathematics and language arts at the early childhood, elementary, and high school levels. will be done.
Prior to the fair, the College of Education and Human Development will host a series of professional development workshops for students, including a Q&A with Maine's Milken Educator Award recipients. Established by the Milken Family Foundation, this award is presented to beginning to mid-career teachers in recognition of their significant accomplishments and promise for future achievement. Milken's panel discussion included Hilary Hoyt of the LeRoy H. Smith School in Winterport and Sarah Collins of the Patricia A. Duran School in Hermon, who are still teaching and receiving recent awards. Mary Gard and Dick Durost, who won the Milken Prize in the 1990s, will also appear. I quit teaching.
