Earlier this month, leaked data of millions of current and former AT&T customers, including Social Security numbers, was posted on the dark web.
The breach prompted a “robust investigation by internal and external cybersecurity experts,” the telecom giant announced on Saturday.
AT&T said the compromised data appeared to date back to before 2019 and included information on approximately 7.6 million current customers and 65.4 million former customers.
The compromised information may have included customers' names, email and mailing addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, dates of birth, AT&T account numbers, and passcodes.
“It is not yet clear whether the data in these areas originated from AT&T or one of its vendors,” the company said, adding that there is currently no evidence that the breach was caused by unauthorized access to its systems. added.
AT&T's reset affected customer passwords, the report said, after TechCrunch warned the company on Monday that vast amounts of data, including customer passwords, was being dumped on the dark web.
The company said it is contacting those affected by the breach to let them know what information was compromised and is offering free identity theft and credit monitoring services.
The breach comes a month after millions of AT&T customers suffered a nationwide cell phone outage that left some customers without service for up to 12 hours. The company blamed the disruption on a failed software update.
