Another Southern California high school is investigating the possibility that nude photos of students generated by artificial intelligence were distributed.
This time, Laguna Beach High School is at the center of the investigation, as a similar incident occurred in Beverly Hills.
The Laguna Beach Unified School District is investigating how the AI-generated images were created or who was behind them. It was also not immediately clear if the photo was shared on social media.
The district said the Laguna Beach Police Department is also involved in the investigation and the high school notified parents about the photo earlier this week.
A woman whose son attends the high school said she learned about the investigation from her teenage son, who claimed the images included fake nude photos.
“Sadly, I don't think it would surprise me anymore if something like that happened anywhere,” said the woman, who did not want to be named. “[My son] He said some girls feel objectified and it really pisses him off. [because] He has three sisters. ”
The school district said it understands the potential impact the fabricated photos could have on students, parents and staff.
“We recognize that recent incidents may have a significant impact on school culture,” the district said in a statement.
The district plans to host a series of panel discussions this week with students from each grade level.
“For now, we are focusing on the discussion, “What is AI?'' And what is the appropriate use of AI? How can it be used for learning? How can it be used to influence others? What is the proper way to use it to enhance learning without giving?” said Anacaren Cárdenas Ureno of the district.
Some parents said the discussion would send a strong message to all teens, encouraging them to use AI in a positive and respectful manner.
One parent, who also requested anonymity, said: “If we can teach young children that, they will confront infected people so that they catch it and don't do this kind of thing and spread the infection.'' I hope so.”
