Ksoloti Gills is a new 13-control DIY desktop synth powered by Ksoloti, the successor to the Axoloti modular core.
The Nord Modular was a hardware synth that used a software modular core made up of an editor. It was an exciting hybrid concept that could do a lot. This was a very ambitious and expensive project for Nord, and nearly destroyed the company.
Nord's unique hybrid concept was until recently incorporated into the Axoloti core, a hardware board with user-programmable I/O using a patcher. You can use it to create synths, effects, and more. However, production problems arose and the Ahoroti was discontinued.
Thanks to its open source design, the project was recently revived as Ksoloti Core by a new team of developers. They brought it into a more classic synth world with Ksoloti Gills.

Like the original board, the Ksoloti core offers the same functionality and aims for maximum compatibility with some layout changes and additional features.
You can use patcher software to create custom sound patches or modify existing sound patches. Once created, you can put it in your hardware and play without a computer.
Ksoloti Gills made the whole thing even more interesting. Convert your hardware board into a standalone desktop unit and add tactile controls and input/output options.
It provides a 1.3 inch OLED screen, 128*64 pixels, and I2C to visually represent the parameters of the patch. Additionally, it hosts an encoder with switch functionality and 10 assignable knob controls.
There are also four assignable buttons and additional LEDs. All these extra knobs and buttons allow you to fine-tune loaded patches like a classic synth.
Connectivity
The new I/O also ensures that the Ksoloti Core becomes a standalone synth.
- Expansion jack x 2: 3.5 mm stereo, default not connected. Can be wired as an additional analog/digital/expression pedal input or analog/digital output
- A CV expander board is included as standard in all kits (using 2 expansion jacks): 2 synth-level CV outputs, +/-5V or 0..10V via solder jumpers, trimmer for scale and offset, V/oct accuracy

First impression
It's a very exciting project. I've been a big fan of his Axoloti Core since day one. I'm happy to have this project back. And with additional controls and I/O, this new case looks cleaner. It looks like this project is sold out, but we hope the new enclosure arrives soon
Ksoloti Gills is now available as a DIY project from Thonk. Ksoloti Core costs £66 + VAT, Ksoloti Enclosure £110 + VAT.
