JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced the discovery of a data breach that affected the personal information of nearly 500,000 customers.
A major bank recently discovered a software issue that has been active since August 26, 2021, according to a new filing with the Maine Attorney General's Office.
The bug allowed unauthorized access to 451,809 customers' retirement plan records, including names, addresses, social security numbers, and bank account numbers.
JPMorgan announced that it has fixed an issue that incorrectly granted full access to multiple “authorized system users” employed by JPMorgan customers or their agents.
The bank said there is no evidence that personal information was misused and is offering affected customers two years of free credit monitoring through Experian.
This isn't the first time JPMorgan Chase has discovered cracks in its security infrastructure.
In 2014, the bank reported its largest data breach in history due to a cyberattack that affected the accounts of 76 million households and 7 million small businesses.
As reported by The New York Times, JPMorgan's security team failed to add two-factor authentication to one of its network servers, allowing customers' email addresses, home addresses, and phone numbers to be stolen. The bank said there was no evidence that account information was compromised in the hack.
