(News USA) – If you're planning on adding a raised deck to your home, there's one element that will greatly increase its value and functionality: an under-deck drainage system. These systems, which divert water to keep the space below your deck dry, are easy to install by professional builders and DIYers alike, and can essentially double your outdoor living space.
Why install a drainage system?
Under-deck drainage systems create a dry space below the surface of your deck that can be used as a patio, outdoor kitchen, private spa area, additional storage space, and more. These systems also protect the wooden joints of the substructure from rot-causing moisture, extending the life of your deck by many years.
Choosing the right system.
There are two types of deck drainage systems: those that are installed above the joists before the deck boards are laid, and those that are retrofitted under the joists of an existing deck. The latter systems expose the deck joists to the elements, while above-joist systems, such as Trex® RainEscape®, protect the entire deck foundation from moisture intrusion. Homeowners can also run gas or electrical pipes discreetly between the drainage system and the soffit to power lights, ceiling fans, appliances and electronics.
Installation is as easy as 1-2-3.
Deck drainage systems use a network of troughs and funnels and can be installed using tools you probably already have at home — typically all you need is scissors or a utility knife, a staple gun, and a caulking gun.
- Determine the location of downspouts and guttersCut the funnels to fit between the joists and place them along the edge joists or long boards. Lay the guttering material and position it properly so that water will flow into the downspouts. Be careful not to patch or overlap the guttering.
- Staple all the pieces togetherRepeat the installation of the funnel and trough across all beams.
- Tape all beams and jointsUse butyl tape to seal all seams and any places where screws may penetrate the system, this will provide a waterproof installation.
Once a drainage system is installed, you can use the space below your deck to fill it with furniture, lighting, accessories and more to create the outdoor oasis of your dreams.
