The bill was approved Friday by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.) and six Republican co-sponsors, Rep. Andrew Ogles and Rep. Chuck Fleischman (R-Tenn.), and Rep. Michael Walz (R-Pa.). (Florida), along with Representatives Paul A. Gosar (Arizona) and Barry Moore (Alabama). and Troy E. Neals of Texas.
The move would change the name of the airport, located about 40 miles west of Washington, D.C., to Donald J. Trump International Airport. According to the two-page bill text, any reference to the airport on maps, documents, documents, or other government records relating to the airport “shall be deemed a reference to Donald J. Trump International Airport.”
The bill is currently being considered by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
The airport, which hosts more than 23 million travelers annually, opened in 1962 and was named Dulles International Airport after John Foster Dulles, former Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. . (The airport was renamed Washington Dulles International Airport in 1984.)
“For millions of domestic and international travelers, there is no greater symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing 'Welcome to Trump International Airport' as they land on U.S. soil,” Reschenthaler said in a statement. There's no symbolism.”
Democrats rejected the bill on Tuesday. “That idea is ridiculous,” said Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), who is running for governor. I wrote to X. He continued that Congress should focus on reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration and passing national security funding. “But the focus of House Republican leadership is renaming Dulles Airport in Virginia after Trump.”
“Donald Trump faces 91 felonies. If Republicans want to name him after him, they will be sentenced to federal prison. I would like to suggest that you find it.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Airports Authority, which manages Dulles Airport, declined to comment.
