Last month, the U.S. Department of Education released the 2024 Green Ribbon Schools list. Our school, Hoover High School, made the list out of 41 schools nationwide. Read below to find out why.
What is Green Ribbon School?
Haven't heard of Green Ribbon Schools? Green Ribbon Schools, a new initiative adopted by the U.S. Department of Education, highlights schools that demonstrate a high commitment to sustainable practices, including:
- Cost reduction initiatives
- Sustainability practices that improve performance
- Health Promotion
Green Ribbon School Award winners are invited to a ceremony at the White House, receive a plaque, and serve as role models for other schools.
“This year's U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools are leading school reforms in their states to ensure every student in every region has the opportunity to grow into strong, healthy learners.”
Miguel Cardona, U.S. Secretary of Education
Why is Hoover High School on the list of Green Ribbon Schools?
According to a press release from Hoover High School, the U.S. Department of Education has recognized the Buccaneers for incorporating environmental education into various studies.
For example, students in biology and other environmental courses took advantage of Hoover High School's proximity to the Cahaba River. Viable technologies such as solar energy learning stations, sensory gardens, and mental health trails give students a hands-on perspective on the environment.
Advanced Placement Environmental Science teacher and STEM team coach Janet Ort said in a press release that the students play an important role in this honor.
“Many of BioBucs' research and service projects represent our passion and interests. Without their work, we would not have as many exciting opportunities and local, state, and national recognition. I couldn't have done it.”
Janet Ort, Advanced Placement Environmental Science Teacher and STEM Team Coach
