(KRON) — Crime trends are changing in Oakland this year, with violent crime rates decreasing and robberies increasing, according to city data.
Oakland Police's latest statistics for 2024 show a decline in homicides and assaults compared to the same period in 2023. Homicides are down 17 percent, assaults with firearms are down 21 percent, and rapes are down 21 percent. Violent crime this year overall is down 33 percent compared to last year.
However, not all of Oakland's crime trends are positive. Robberies increased by 11% and residential burglaries by 118%. In his first four months of 2024 alone, he committed more than 1,000 robberies in the city.
According to OPD data, there have been 3,013 robberies and 25 murders within the past four months. This time last year, 30 people lost their lives to murders in the city.
A non-fatal shooting occurred on 98th Street in Oakland Thursday morning. Her mother was driving her daughter to school when the SUV was caught in the crossfire. Her mother tried to drive away from the gunfire, but the SUV was hit by another car and overturned. The woman and her daughter crawled out of the SUV, and the hit-and-run driver fled the scene. The victim was not seriously injured.
