Nashville, Tennessee – HCA Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE:HCA), one of the nation's leading healthcare providers, today announced that Dr. Monique Butler has been appointed dean of graduate medical education, effective March 1, 2024. Dr. Butler replaces Dr. Bruce Dayton. He plans to retire from HCA Healthcare in late 2024.
In his new role, Dr. Butler will be responsible for company-wide leadership of HCA Healthcare's graduate medical education (GME) strategy, growth and development, quality and operations, including program accreditation, and clinical performance for more than 300 training and fellowship programs. Dr. Butler served as Chief Medical Officer of HCA Healthcare's North Florida Division for the past three years. Under her leadership, North Florida has consistently been recognized for excellence in care, quality and physician satisfaction. Dr. Butler joined HCA Healthcare in 2018 as Chief Medical Officer of Swedish Medical Center. Dr. Butler has previously served in a variety of clinical leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer at Children's Hospital of Michigan, Chief Medical Officer at Receiving Hospital in Detroit, and Chief Medical Officer at Grace Hospital in Sinai. In each of these roles, Dr. Butler was responsible for the strategy, development, operations, and quality of the GME program, with a focus on faculty recruitment, resident advocacy, resident retention, engagement, and communication.
Dr. Butler holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology-Movement Science from the University of Michigan, a Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tennessee. Additionally, he maintains his faculty appointments at the University of Central Florida School of Medicine and the University of Tennessee Haslam College of Business.
Dr. Dayton will continue to serve as the GME President's senior position to ensure a seamless transition, leveraging a history of successful collaboration for the benefit of the residents, fellows, faculty, and communities served by HCA Healthcare. I will be involved as an advisor.
Under Dr. Dayton's leadership, HCA Healthcare's GME platform has grown to 5,185 residents across 72 hospitals.
