The first bachelor's degree program in artificial intelligence is coming to Florida, but it won't be at the University of Florida, Florida State University or the University of Miami.
I'm at Miami Dade College.
MDC already offers an AA degree in AI, with 600 students enrolled.
“I really like the possibilities that AI has. In fact, I think it's relevant to many fields, not just technology,” he said, researching AI in this program and currently working in the field. said Jazmin Evendora, who also plans to earn a B.A. .
The four-year program attracts students of all ages, including Jose Fernández Calvo, who has already earned a law degree and a doctorate in education. I asked him why he was going back to school.
“I'm interested in higher education because AI is impacting everything we do. AI can be applied to everything in higher education,” Fernandez-Calvo said.
“As we continue to grow, Miami remains a technology hub, so it's important that we offer degrees that meet the needs of our workforce,” said Manny Perez, MDC Dean of Engineering and Design. says Mr.
They don't just teach theory here at MDC, they aim to apply artificial intelligence to the real world based on what industry leaders are looking for in their graduates.
“They said to us, Manny, we need someone who can apply AI,” Perez said. “We don't need people who can design and program new systems, but we do need people with the knowledge and skills to apply them regardless of the industry they work in.”
“My main focus is on the agriculture field,” Evendorra said when asked what she plans to do with her AI degree. “Creating more optimal agricultural systems and reducing waste, including water waste, is a huge problem in the world and the possibilities are enormous.”
Evendorra sees one thing in technology, but her classmate Willie Orozco sees something else.
“We definitely need to educate. Education is a very powerful tool and all you have to do is take a hammer, right? You can build a house, you can hurt someone with a hammer, but , it's how a person uses it, so I think there's a higher calling to teach people how to use it in a responsible way,” Orozco explained. He is pursuing his AI degree.
The program will begin in the fall semester at two locations: North Campus and the downtown Wolfson Campus. Registration is currently being accepted.
