Dr. Fred Filiano has been appointed dean of the Troy University School of Education.
The announcement was made by Board Chair Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. at Thursday's board meeting. Dr. Filiano has been serving as interim president of the university since June 2023.
“After a national search, I am pleased to announce that we have appointed Dr. Filiano as dean to lead the College of Education,” said Dr. Hawkins. “Troy University was founded in 1887 as a teacher's college, and its tradition of graduating high-quality educational professionals to serve in classrooms across Alabama and beyond continues today. I believe that his continued leadership will serve our students, faculty, and university well.”
Prior to serving as interim dean, Dr. Filiano served as associate dean for academic affairs and strategic initiatives in the College of Education.
Dr. Filiano joined Troy University as an adjunct faculty member in 2011 and became a full-time faculty member in 2014 as an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education. From 2019 to 2021 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Education.
Dr. Filiano was a 2021 Troy University Presidential Fellow and one of the Notable Leaders selected by the International Association of Technology and Engineering Educators in 2018. In 2022, he was selected to participate in the American Association of State Universities' Emerging Leaders Program.
Dr. Filiano received his bachelor's degree in technology education from the College of New Jersey in 2006, his master's degree in education in 2007, and his Ph.D. in 2007. in Curriculum and Instruction (2011) with a specialization in integrated STEM education, both from Virginia Tech. He also earned a certificate in Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education from Virginia Tech.
