This year, the first Saturday of the month had the highest number of drunk driving suspects traveling to and from Fiesta.
SAN ANTONIO — The number of heavy drinkers deciding to get behind the wheel after drinking too much after a Fiesta event is decreasing, based on arrests made by San Antonio police.
According to numbers provided by the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), officers made 146 Fiesta-related DWI arrests during the 11-day celebration last month. This is a decrease from the previous two years, when SAPD officers made 146 and 129 Fiesta-related DWI arrests in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
The first Saturday of Fiesta 2024 saw the most arrests in a single day, with 18 drunk driving suspects taken into custody. Last weekend, from Friday through Sunday, SAPD increased his Fiesta-related DWI arrests to his 36, compared to the same weekend last year when he had 57.
San Antonio police typically focus on road surveillance during Fiesta, given that Fiesta is synonymous with drinking alcohol.
As for what constitutes a Fiesta-related DWI concern, SAPD told KENS 5 officers to rely on “evidence that may indicate that they were attending a Fiesta,” including the driver's destination to and from. I told them that I was there. In some cases, drivers admitted to being in the Fiesta when they were stopped by police.
