Foals frontman Yanis Filipakis has announced details of a new project that began to take shape in 2017 when he first collaborated with the late Fela Kuti's legendary drummer Tony Allen.
Giannis, formerly known as Giannis & The Yo, will release his new EP “Lagos Paris London'' on Transgressive Records on August 30th. Although Giannis is adamant that the EP was not the beginning of a so-called “solo career,” it began during a two-day session in Paris, where Tony's longtime collaborator Vincent Tager (percussion, marimba) ), and also co-starred with Vincent Taurel (Key). and Ludovic Bruni (bass, guitar), and was completed after Tony's death in 2020.
“We needed to finish it in a way that we haven't felt on any previous albums,” Giannis said of the EP. “There was a deep obligation to honor him by getting it done, completing it as best as possible, and putting it out into the world. These recordings were some of the last musical works he ever worked on, so some It was a moving experience to see the drum takes of “Drums.'' There's a timeless quality to these drum tracks, and you can feel the continuity of his life and energy through them. He wanted people to hear this. So it's nice to be able to do that for him, but of course it's a little bittersweet.”
