When I'm asked to name my ultimate bucket list hunt, I immediately answer, “Alaska/Yukon elk archery adventure.” In fact, I may be too old to do DIY bowhunting with my friends. My friend and I are in decent shape, but we weren't triathletes. Plus, I don't make enough money to book this type of guided bowhunting. Prices for a 10-day hunt start at $28,000.
But it's still fun to dream.
In the following 19-minute YouTube video from Hunt Fish Kauai, two bowhunters (above) embark on a DIY Alaskan elk adventure (mid-to-late September 2022). The story is set in the Brooks Mountains in northern Alaska, where they plan to explore a new river. “New” refers to rivers that experience little or no hunting pressure due to their remote location.
How far is it?
The two bowhunters are lowered into the lake by seaplane and must travel about nine miles through the bush, dragging all their equipment, including two rubber boats, to reach their river destination. You'll spend a total of 11 days in the wilderness, drifting over 50 miles.
I hesitate to describe their adventures further because I don't want to serve as a spoiler. I think it's best to watch the events unfold and be as surprised as I was by the biggest challenges they had to overcome in the end. And yes, the men kill two large bulls. The encounters are thrilling and the video quality is top notch. enjoy!
