University leaders say the investment in technology will provide students with hands-on experience.
Budget appropriators aim to funnel $4.5 million in state funds to Florida Southwestern (FSW) State University. The Fort Myers school plans to use the funds to strengthen its radiology technology program.
Latest offer Senate education spending provides more than $2.2 million in recurring revenue and an additional $2.2 million in non-recurring revenue. The same amount is already earmarked for schools in the House higher education budget.

The request is from the FSW Chairman Jeffrey Allbritten.
“The goal achieved by the requested funding is to enhance the hands-on learning experience for students who utilize the lab. This will improve student career readiness, improve student achievement, and encourage more “Radiology Technology Program,'' the AllBulletin filing states.
Specifically, the funds will go toward two vibrant research labs on campus that will provide “a dynamic lab where students can gain practical knowledge, real-time feedback, and mentorship from experienced faculty prior to clinical exams. FSW's enrollment rate could potentially accommodate up to 60 additional students per year to enter the workforce. ”
The House and Senate agreed to include the project in the budget. But that may not be the only money schools receive.
Both the House and Senate also set aside funding for schools. Innovation and Advanced Technology Research Institute. Botana is asking for $1.5 million for the project, while the House's latest higher education proposal is $2.3 million. The Senate will give $3 million more.
Both chambers split the cost of the project 50-50 between current and non-recurring dollars.
However, neither chamber has any plans for a third request, which Botana will submit on behalf of state universities. He also spent more than his $5.9 million on renovating FSW's campus police headquarters.
