Multi-tool meets à la carte dining: ZEN is an EDC multi-tool that lets you choose the tools you want to carry. While Swiss knives and other multi-tools don't let you choose which tools to include, ZEN emphasizes versatility and customizability. It comes with an “empty” holder so you can add the tools of your choice, giving you a truly DIY feel with your Swiss knife. Carry only the tools you need and swap them out whenever you want a change. Why settle for a multi-tool that's only 30% usable because you don't use or need 70% of the tools included in the design… right?

ZEN's à la carte approach has a definite appeal. Just like with a desktop PC, you have the freedom to design your own EDC. Just as you choose the motherboard, CPU, GPU, and storage to your liking, ZEN lets you add the tools of your choice to an open framework. There are seven tools included in the design, and you can add everything to the ZEN holder, or just keep it basic and hold only the tools you use most often.
The seven tools that come with the ZEN cater to a variety of needs and requirements. It comes with a bottle opener, rope cutter (that doubles as a flathead screwdriver), wood/metal file, awl or prying tool, serrated tooth saw, drop point knife, and a screwdriver that allows you to incorporate your preferred hex bit into your design. You probably won't need all these tools at once, so instead of carrying a bulky and heavy EDC all the time, you can choose to carry only the tools you may eventually need.
In fact, ZEN developers are working on more tools that can be purchased as add-ons and attached to the multi-tool. Individual accessories include rulers, combs, diamond files, scalpel blades, scissors, fish hooks, bike spoke wrenches, can openers, utility knives, and many more in development. Installation is as easy as hooking it onto ZEN and it stays securely in place until you need to remove it. You can build your own multi-tool for a specific scenario or set of scenarios. A camping specific multi-tool might include a rope cutter, knife and bottle opener, while repairs require bike spokes, a screwdriver, a file and a pry tool. The possibilities are as endless as your needs and requirements.
Using the ZEN is as easy as a Swiss knife: fold and unfold your tools when you need them, then slide them back into the holder when you're done. Tools are stacked inside the holder, and the top tool can be opened one-handed. This means it's best to place a drop point knife or rope cutter on top and open it one-handed just like any other EDC.
The holder or outer shell of the ZEN is one standard size that can hold multiple tools, but you can choose from three different materials. The most common (and affordable) is stainless steel, followed by G10 fiber, which most EDC enthusiasts will love for its grip and feel. You can also opt for a titanium holder, which makes the ZEN virtually indestructible, but the tools inside are all 440C high carbon stainless steel.
The ZEN is completely CNC machined, from the holders to the tools themselves. The overall length of the multi-tool is 3.54″ when closed, making for a sturdy yet lightweight design (weight will vary depending on how many tools you add to the ZEN). Finally, a pocket clip on the side allows you to attach your custom multi-tool to a pocket lining for easy access. The ZEN DIY multi-tool ships worldwide, with prices starting at $49 for the stainless steel version and $55 and $69 for the G10 and titanium versions, respectively.
