With summer just a few months away, many homeowners are looking to spruce up their patios.
But before you rush to the store to buy paint to give your patio a DIY patio makeover, one woman reveals why it's not always the best idea.
The crafty Victoria, from Milton Keynes, UK, took to TikTok to tell how she went from a dirty patio to a stunning outdoor space and back to a hot mess in just one year.
Victoria, who decided to build a patio during lockdown, came up with the idea of painting the concrete with an intricate stencil design.
For this reason, she showed in the video that the crafty DIYer started by scrubbing the concrete area clean. The process took her “many years.”
Once all surfaces were clean and ready for remodeling, Victoria, who lives in a stunning Victorian home, used a special Weathershield paint in light grey.
To add more flair, the smart woman, who regularly shares home-related content on her page, added stencils and white paint to the design.
After completing a patio glow-up using patio sealant to ensure the patio was intact, Victoria was delighted with the before and after results and said she “loved it”.
Sadly for Victoria and her husband, the joy didn't last long, and by next summer the paint had already begun to peel “heavily”.
The patio was particularly bad around the edges where the concrete was exposed, leaving a big “mess” in the garden.
Fearing the aftermath, Victoria was left with no other option but to “glue artificial turf instead.''
The DIY over warned other green-fingered Brits not to make the same grave mistake, saying: “Here's why you shouldn't be painting your patio this summer, folks!” Ta.
She continued in her comments that this doesn't happen to everyone, but it's worth being aware of the potential dangers of a dilapidated patio.
“Some people say their era continues, but I think they are in the minority!”
Since then, hundreds of people have flocked to the comments to share their thoughts and speculations about why things went so horribly wrong.
Some people wonder, “Did you prime before painting?”and i would [have] It was then sealed using resin. ”
Another said: “Well, the artificial grass looks much nicer than the paint. Not that the paint was bad, but it's too gray and doesn't look like a garden. In the end, it all worked out.”
A third person said: “Our car is painted with polyurethane paint and it's lasted almost 3 years so far with hardly any stains coming out.”
“Fake grass gets very hot in the summer so be very careful. Your feet will burn when you walk on it,” another person warned.
