Dell is warning customers about a data breach that allegedly affected 49 million customers. The PC maker warned users in an email that it was investigating an incident involving the Dell portal, which contained limited types of customer information related to purchases from the company.
Dell also said it believed there was no material risk to customers given the type of information involved, according to the Bleeping Computer report.
Dell said the information the attackers accessed during the breach included names, addresses, and other information related to Dell hardware and ordering information, as well as financial and payment information and email addresses. , no phone number was included. The company also said it is working with law enforcement and third-party forensic agencies to investigate the incident.
The data breach first came to light on April 28, when attackers attempted to sell Dell's database on a hacking forum.

The attackers claimed to have accessed data stolen from the computer maker's 49 million customers who purchased from Dell between 2017 and 2024, as well as other information related to systems purchased from Dell.
Although Dell does not believe this data breach poses a significant threat to customers, in the past attackers have been able to send physical emails containing phishing links or emails containing media such as DVDs or thumb drives. It was known to target individuals and install malware on target devices.
Posts on hacking forums advertising the sale of data have since been deleted, which could indicate that the data is being used in other forms of attacks. Therefore, we recommend that customers be wary of physical mailings or emails impersonating Dell that ask them to install software, change their password, or perform actions that may compromise their security. .
