WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) — Students took Thursday off from school and spent the day cheering on the Delaware Blue Coats at Chase Fieldhouse as part of the team's Education Day.
Children were pouring out of school buses, filling the bleachers and counting down the minutes until tipoff.
Schools from around the area were invited to the daytime game.
For 7-year-old season ticket holder Jasper Dozier, the opportunity meant sharing his love for the team with his classmates.
“The Blue Coats are one of my favorite teams in the G League,” Dozier said.
All the passion of the youngest fan was transferred to the team.
“You could feel it,” head coach Mike Longabardi said. “They had great energy and I think our players fed off of that energy. So any time you can get them out there and bring all that energy and energy, that's always good for us. is.”
Special education teacher Karen Gray appreciates the team's efforts to engage the next generation in reading.
“They send books to every student in our school,” Gray said. “It's very generous, and in a time when kids and families don't have that kind of money. They don't have a lot of extra money, so it's really, really generous.”
When halftime arrived, it was time for the Blue Coats to stand up and the teachers to take over the court and play musical chairs.
When the game resumed, Jasper and his classmates returned to the sideline to cheer as the Blue Coats won 126-115, making for a field trip to remember.
The Blue Coats will play the Grand Rapids Gold again on Friday at Chase Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
