A Chinese woman about to get married was shocked to learn that she was biologically male just before her wedding. This woman, who has lived as a woman for 27 years, was diagnosed with a rare disease.
The woman, identified as Li Yuan (name changed to protect her identity) from central China's Hubei province, revealed that she was carrying a testicle in her abdomen, the South China Morning Post reported. Biologically male.
According to the report, the woman was initially concerned about her lack of menstrual periods and delayed breast development after puberty. When she was 18 years old, Li Yuan visited the hospital and was diagnosed with abnormal hormone levels and possible ovarian failure. Her doctors then recommended further chromosome testing. The newspaper reported that veteran gynecologist Duan Jie diagnosed Yuan with a rare disease called congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) when she decided to undergo a thorough examination just before the wedding. According to the report, tests revealed that Yuan also suffered from osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency due to not receiving early treatment. Doctors suggested immediate surgical removal of Yuan's testicles in his abdomen due to the high risk of cancer.
According to the report, Yuan successfully had his testicles removed in early April this year. She now requires regular follow-up tests and long-term hormone therapy. Dr. Duan said early diagnosis and treatment of people with symptoms similar to Yuan's is important.
