CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The Charleston Police Department has released its annual report providing residents with data on crime in the city for 2023 and beyond.
The department responded to 312 resistance/aggression incidents in 2023. After reviewing the data, the department concluded that the number of use-of-force incidents decreased by 6.9% and the number of officers individually involved decreased by 5.1%.
By team, Teams 3 and 4 saw a decrease in use of force, while Teams 2 and 5 saw an increase, according to CPD data.
There were 340 aggravated assault cases in 2023, a slight increase from 2022 and 2021. In 2023, there were 10 murders, one more than in 2022. In 2021, there were 16 homicides.
In terms of property crimes, there were 263 reports of theft/breaking and entering in 2023. There were 447 motor vehicle thefts, he said, CPD reported. 786 vehicles were stolen, an increase from both 2022 and 2021.
