Ring has a ton of baggage, but its five-part home security system is a solid mid-range DIY security option for renters. Comes with door/window sensor, motion sensor, keypad, range extender, and base station. It's not as good as the Ring Alarm Pro system, but many renters don't need a new router, much less a mesh Wi-Fi system.
What I like most about this Ring Alarm for renters is that it works with the Ring Peephole Cam. The Ring Peephole Cam is one of the only video doorbells that works with peepholes commonly found in apartment buildings. Like Wyze, Ring unfortunately does not have cell backup.

SimpliSafe is a popular DIY home security system among renters for several reasons. It's reliable, reasonably priced, and doesn't have any major weaknesses (yes, there's a backup for your phone here, unlike his two systems above). That said, SimpliSafe does have one drawback, especially for renters. The thing is, that video doorbell is wired only. For many renters who don't have doorbell wiring (or permission to tinker with the wiring), a video doorbell becomes unnecessary.
If you're not worried about a video doorbell, SimpliSafe offers a great package that beats direct competitors like Abode, although it's slightly more expensive than the systems above. Prices for the packages start at $245, but his website at SimpliSafe regularly has sales for significantly lower prices. For example, as of this writing, the basic package costs just $196.

Each system we test we install ourselves, just like we would at home. For professional systems like ADT or Comcast Xfinity, have your installer set it up for you. After installation, spend at least one week testing the system and all device-specific functionality. While we prioritize value in our rankings, we also strongly consider the quality of the hardware, service, and general user experience, such as ease of setup and frequency of false alarms. You can add a home security system to your rental apartment or home, but it's often a DIY, non-invasive system (for example, one that doesn't require drilling holes in your walls or doors or rewiring your doorbell). is your best bet. Additionally, professionally installed security services may come with contracts that extend beyond the lease term, further complicating your next transition.
Before purchasing a system or signing up for a service, check your rental agreement to make sure major changes, such as installing a home security system, are allowed in your apartment or home.

Outdoor cameras are usually not recommended in apartments because they regularly capture footage of people in public spaces, unless they are confined to a private space like a backyard. Additionally, many lease agreements do not allow outdoor installation of equipment such as cameras or satellite dishes.
On the other hand, there are many reasons why you might want to add a security camera or two. internal. Smart home cameras are a great way to keep an eye on your kids or pets from another room when you're away. When it comes to security, cameras can capture images and videos of intruders and send alerts. Additionally, the presence of a security camera is often enough to deter potential robbers, so consider installing the camera in a location where it can be easily seen by others.

Installing a home security system that monitors your front door and the inside of your apartment is one of the best ways to keep your home safe, but there are other steps you can take. We recommend that you store valuables out of sight, especially through windows (where they can be seen from outside).
The buddy system is free but an invaluable way to increase security in your apartment. Make friends with your neighbors, contact them about suspicious activity, and ask them to watch your property while you watch other people's.
