ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Norton YMCA broke ground on renovations to its Pleasant Street facility this week.
This milestone marked the beginning of a $1 million project to create a state-of-the-art early childhood education center.
The Y has secured a $450,000 state grant to pay for renovations scheduled to begin this month.
“Today marks a pivotal moment in our commitment to providing excellent child care services,” Y CEO Lee Fontes said in a news release. “By breaking ground on our renovation project, we are not just building classrooms. We are shaping the future and creating a nurturing environment in which all children can thrive.”
The center currently has 45 children licensed. Once the renovations are complete, it will be licensed for 65-year-olds. The classroom accommodates children from 6 weeks to 5 years old.
Officials say the initiative will greatly benefit the community by providing an affordable child care option that rivals more expensive child care facilities.
The Y says it is committed to setting aside 51% of its slots for low-income households for at least five years and maintaining at least 30% of its low-income slots thereafter.
Renovations include upgrades to HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
New flooring, lighting, windows and high-security doors will be installed.
This enhancement also includes the installation of hand-washing sinks in all classrooms.
Officials say the project will create job opportunities for 20 early childhood education professionals.
