A child and at least one other person were injured in a shooting outside a Missouri high school, North Kansas City police said Saturday, less than a month after a mass shooting at a Super Bowl celebration shook the region. It was announced that.
Two victims were transported from the scene to a local hospital, North Kansas City Police Sgt. Christopher Kimmel told reporters Saturday night. Both victims were initially reported to be in critical condition, but North Kansas City Deputy Administrator Kim Nakahodo later announced that the boy was upgraded to critical but stable condition.
The second victim, whose age has not been released by police, is being treated at a local hospital, the city said.
Kimmel said there were no suspects in custody and it was unclear how many people fired shots. Police are reviewing video from the scene and speaking with witnesses.
At North Kansas City High School, shots were heard outside the school at the end of the game, Kimmel said.
Two Clayton County Sheriff's Office officers who were on duty during the game were first on the scene and found one person injured outside, Kimmel said. Police did not provide information on where the second victim was found, but said the investigation was ongoing and they were working to determine if there were other victims.
North Kansas City Schools said in a statement Saturday night that the shooting at the end of a game between North Kansas City High School and Staley High School occurred outside an east side building. All guests inside were asked to remain indoors while law enforcement responded.
Witnesses reported seeing someone running from the scene at the entrance to the football field, the city said in a statement.
“While we have no further details to share, we can confirm that all parties involved have been contacted directly,” the district said. “I look forward to a thorough investigation by the police.”
The shooting occurred as the Kansas City metropolitan area is still reeling from the mass shooting at the Chiefs' Super Bowl celebration last month that left one person dead and 22 injured.
“We want young people to come and enjoy a basketball game, and now we're talking about lives that have changed for the worst. We're sure it's going to be pointless. “There are,” Kimmel said.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
