(The Hill) — Approximately 73 million current and former AT&T account holders are affected by this month's data set leak to the dark web.
AT&T said it is investigating a data set breach that affected approximately 7.6 million checking account holders and 65.4 million former account holders, the carrier said.
The company said preliminary analysis revealed that the dataset dates back to 2019 or earlier. AT&T said there is currently no evidence of unauthorized access to its systems as a result of this month's breach.
The company's investigation was assisted by “internal and external cybersecurity experts.”
The carrier said it is investigating the source of the data, but “doesn't yet know” whether it came from AT&T or its vendor.
This incident has not had a significant impact on the telecommunications company's management.
AT&T, whose 5G network reaches about 295 million people in the U.S., plans to stay in contact with customers affected by the breach and provide “credit monitoring.”
Last month, the company suffered an outage that affected users across the country. Users experienced issues with wireless connectivity. The incident sparked a federal investigation involving the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and FBI.
After a several-hour outage in February, the company announced it would give affected users a $5 credit.
