AMD is reportedly will soon introduce its Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F “IGPU-less” APUs to the global DIY market.
AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F will hit the DIY market soon, with iGPU-less APUs coming at slightly lower prices
AMD recently announced the Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F APUs in China. These APUs were later confirmed to be launched in the global market, but the target was limited to his OEM. Well, it looks like AMD has changed its decision to limit these to OEMs and is now planning a DIY launch, giving AM5 users more options in the mainstream and budget segments.

Starting with the specifications, the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F APU features 8 cores and 16 threads based on the Zen 4-core architecture. The base clock is 4.1 GHz and the boost clock is 5.05 GHz, making both base and boost slower compared to the Ryzen 7 8700G (boost -0.05 GHz / base -0.10 GHz). It has a total of 16 MB of L3 cache, but no RDNA 3 iGPU.
Similarly, AMD Ryzen 5 8400F features 6 cores and 12 threads based on Zen 4 architecture. It has a base clock of 4.2 GHz and a boost clock of 4.75 GHz (-0.25 GHz boost / +0.1 GHz base). The chip also has 16MB of L3 cache and 6MB of L2 cache, but no RDNA 3 iGPU. In terms of TDP, both chips are configured at 65W. You can find our first reviews of both APUs here.
Interestingly, it doesn't have an iGPU, but the NPU specs are carried over from the non-F SKU. For AMD Ryzen 7 8700F, the 16 TOPS “XDNA” NPU is still available, while AMD Ryzen 5 8400F has no NPU functionality. This is because the 8500F does not have an NPU. Both APUs are compatible with AM5 and have overclocking capabilities like his other APUs.
Official pricing for the DIY launch has not yet been revealed, but the two models are expected to be priced lower than the 'G' SKU. The Ryzen 7 8700G retails for $329 USD, so the Ryzen 7 8700F is expected to cost $299 USD, while the Ryzen 5 8500G retails for $179 USD, so the Ryzen 5 8400F is expected to cost $149 USD.
These prices give current AM4 owners a good mainstream APU option to upgrade to. Some AM5 motherboards can be purchased for less than $150 USD, and a good 32 GB DDR5 kit can be purchased for less than $90 USD, so when you put it all together you can get a decent build in the sub-500 USD range. Note that there is no iGPU onboard, so users will need to purchase a separate discrete graphics card. Also, if you're going for the entry-level Radeon RX 7000 GPU, keep in mind that prices start at around $229 (RX 7600).
