If you can't wait (and don't care about the warranty), he sells a retrofit kit for $45.
One engineer said AirPods Max owners who are DIY types now have one less reason to upgrade to the new model Apple is expected to eventually release.
“AirPods Max 2 – Before Apple!” That's the title of a video posted to YouTube by hardware hacker Ken Pironel on Wednesday. Pillonel shows you how to convert the charging port on his $549 AirPods Max headphones from Apple's signature Lightning port to USB-C in less than four minutes.
Apple plans to switch to a USB-C port, as it currently does on iPhones, in the next version of AirPods Max, which could arrive later this year, Bloomberg reported in October.
But Pironel isn't willing to wait, calling his modified headphones “the world's first USB-C AirPods Max” in the video description.
If you're handy and don't mind voiding your AppleCare+ warranty, Pillonel sells a DIY kit with instructions on how to install a USB-C port on your headphones for $45.
Apple first introduced the Lightning port with the iPhone 5 over a decade ago. The port has since been added to many devices, including iPads and accessories, but MacBooks have had a USB-C port for years. That's why many Apple fans want a complete USB-C product lineup, where they only need to know about one type of charging cable.
There are signs that this is starting to happen. Apple has ditched the Lightning port in the latest generation of his AirPods Pro and iPhone 15 in favor of USB-C.
In 2021, Pironel completely defeated Apple and became the first person to modify an iPhone to have a functioning USB-C port. His prototype was put up for auction on eBay and sold for $85,550.
