One influencer has shared how to make a simple and inexpensive fruit fly trap at home, with most of the supplies you probably already have in your kitchen.
Pia Querkis, who is based in New York and Austin, Texas, shared the DIY tip with her 396,000 followers on Instagram.
In a video last month, he demonstrated how a combination of vinegar, dish soap, sugar and sticky fly traps can “magically” get rid of the pesky bugs that are known to plague homeowners over the summer.
The social media star started off by using small vases, explaining that the ones she used were originally meant for propagated plants.
Next, I filled the container about halfway with apple cider vinegar and poured Dawn dish soap on top.
“If they do get in, they'll die,” she explained. “Because it's too heavy? I don't really know the science behind that.”
Pia then added a bit of sugar to the mixture, because the sweet smell “draws them in,” she explained.
“We're creating something that they can't really resist,” she said.
“Then you add hot water, lukewarm water, whatever, and mix it in,” she continued.
Once this is done, Peer reveals he will be using the “star of the show”: the sticky trap.
The influencer said she bought it on Amazon, but did not specify which brand.
Prices for options from online retailers start from just £2.99 for 50 sticky fixtures that can trap the pests.
And if they don't get caught in the glue, they could suffocate in the soapy water below.
“This is how I got rid of fruit flies!!” Pia wrote in the caption.
“I had lots of plants growing and had to clean the drains, but the rest was done by my homemade device (laughs).”
As Pia was filming the tutorial, she managed to capture one unsuspecting fruit fly heading towards the demo.
Her post garnered more than 271,000 likes, with commenters leaving their own tips and tricks in the comments section.
