This sixth full-length from Real Estate is being released to commemorate their 15th anniversary, and was produced under the guidance of the Grammy Award-winning producer for his work with Kacey Musgraves. It was recorded in just nine days, but no one would expect it to connect with these countless countries. Or maybe you'll be disappointed that the fast pace of the recording process affected the sound of “Daniel”. Their lineup has changed again, but this is essentially the same property we're all familiar with. It's something that frontman Martin Courtney uses as a vehicle for his brand of handsome, gentle indie rock. He carved out “Real Estate” and “Days,” and nearly mastered it a decade earlier with “Atlas.” Since then, the group has largely focused on tweaking rather than reinventing their winning formula, with 2020's 'The Main Thing' featuring some pleasantly subtle expansions. Here, perhaps counterintuitively, they introduce acoustic and slide guitar to play a song that is surprisingly simple, but nonetheless steeped in Nashville's country tradition. It still lacks the rustic feel you'd expect. When penultimate track “Market Street” finally gets a freewheeling guitar solo, it feels liberating, while the spacey, gentle, epic closer “You Are Here” stands out. Maybe. For someone for whom Courtney's songwriting is a calming balm, there's a lot to like here, but there's a sense of creative inertia that means it's a hard record to truly love.
