Public education is the backbone of Montana communities. Children from a variety of social and economic backgrounds form choirs, bands, orchestras, sports teams, and science clubs. They bond over their strange existence as they study algebra, run a mile, do chemistry experiments, and play a concerto. All before lunch. These experiences create and shape the people of our community, and the connections made are the foundation of our state.
However, cracks are appearing in this foundation. Our teachers are paid the lowest in the country and our schools are closed. Last year, the state had a $2 billion budget surplus and a once-in-a-generation opportunity to positively impact Montana families. In return, taxes on industrial real estate, out-of-state businesses, and commercial buildings would be reduced. He then raised taxes on homeowners by $200 million. For example, if your property tax increase is $800, $35 goes to local governments and schools, while $575 goes to tax relief for businesses. Northwestern Energy's property taxes decreased by $36 million, MRL by $2.5 million and Charter by $1.8 million. Our Congress has consistently shown itself to be a party that supports corporate values that are very different from the values of Montana.
We all want our children to have the freedom to decide their own path and the opportunity to succeed, but if we don't vote this administration out, our communities will fall apart. We need to fight for our families, give our children the freedom to thrive, and allow our communities and the state of Montana to thrive.
