Pinterest is a magical place. Filled with beautiful, beautiful homes, perfectly organized office spaces, seasonal crafts to make your home look adorable all year long, and easy projects to spruce up your garden. But how often do you actually try the DIY projects you admire online?
Apparently, many of them are much more difficult than the site would have you believe. Here are some of the funniest Pinterest-versus-real-life mistakes people have shared about their projects. Whether you're a craft expert or not, we hope you enjoy scrolling through these disappointing attempts, and keep reading to find our conversation with her Brandy Nelson from the Gluesticks blog.
I enjoy the act of sitting down and working on a fun little craft, but I also know my limits. Create adorable Valentine's Day cards or bake cute treats for Halloween. You can also paint on Easter eggs or operate a hot glue gun. But when we carve pumpkins, work with wood, elaborately decorate cakes, or use clay, we leave those crafts alone.
But thanks to the internet, we now have endless DIY ideas at our fingertips. According to Sprout Social, Pinterest was his 15th most popular social media site in 2023 with 450 million monthly active users. He says 80% of pinners say the site makes them feel positive and calls it a “social media oasis” compared to other similar sites. Also, most users aren't just scrolling, with 85% of users saying they've used the platform to start a new project.

Guy Fawkes' origami mask attempt fails on Pinterest
As for why Pinterest is loved by users, especially Gen Z, Socially Powerful says the site has a very well-developed search engine. It might even be better than Google! Also, one study found that Pinterest trends go viral 20% faster than those that occur on other platforms during the first six months, making it a popular choice for those who want to keep up with current fashion trends. It's a very good platform.
But of course, many people choose to use Pinterest to find inspiration for projects around the house and crafts to do with their little ones. Unfortunately, these DIY projects don't always go as planned. Is it a failed cake worth posting? nailed it! Or, many of us know the experience of creating something that doesn't meet the expectations set by Pinterest, such as a carved pumpkin that looks much scarier than intended.

A friend made Oscar the Grouch guinea pig costume using instructions from Pinterest.
To get more insight on this topic from a craft expert, we reached out to Brandy Nelson, creator of the Gluesticks blog. He was kind enough to chat with me. bored panda. First, I wanted to know if most of the crafts you see on Pinterest can actually be completed by the average person.
“I think most crafts and DIY projects can be done by anyone. We live in a time where you can figure out how to fix a clothes dryer by watching a YouTube video,” Brandy said. “Sometimes content gets lost in translation, which is why it's important to find detailed tutorials. I'm a visual learner, so he provided links that provide not only tutorials but also step-by-step photos and videos. I often look for it on Pinterest.”

After trying several times, I think I'll have to buy an ink pad.
When it comes to common mistakes people make when embarking on a DIY project, Brandi says it's important to read the entire article or post before starting a project. “I've made that mistake many times,” she admits. “She might start a recipe before making sure she has all the ingredients, or she might not buy the right supplies for a DIY project after just glancing at the supplies list. We do not recommend replacing or skipping steps.”
The experts also shared some tips for readers looking to get into the craft. “Don't be too hard on yourself. Most of my first craft and sewing projects looked wonky or ended up in the trash,” says Brandi. “My sweet husband took a bunch of things out of the trash can and put them aside because he knew I would settle down one day and have the patience to work on them one day. He was right. .”

I made crafts with first graders at a winter workshop. Pinterest expectations and reality
“Take a break and work. [a craft project] A few days later, it worked in my favor several times,” Brandi added. “I learned from my mistakes and now I can reproduce the projects I see on Pinterest. If everything were easy, I wouldn't be able to learn. So I dug in, messed up, and now I can recreate the projects I see on Pinterest. Make two mistakes and improve your skills!”

Thanks to Pinterest and social media for giving my wife the idea to make a paper tree for my son's Winnie the Pooh themed 2nd birthday
If you've got tips for starting a DIY project, but it's not turning out the way you want, Our Home Made Easy has some instructions for what can go wrong with your craft. First, they point out that many people tend to underestimate the amount of work these projects will take. Sometimes you don't have enough time, or you get so preoccupied that you quit before you're done. To avoid this, be sure to understand the project requirements before you start and avoid working within tight deadlines.
It's also easy to start a project without understanding what skills are required to complete it. If you don't have a sewing machine or haven't used one in a decade, creating your child's Halloween costume from scratch can be an incredible challenge. Our Home Made Easy points out that if you don't have the confidence to do it yourself, it may be best to simply outsource the labor or pay someone to do a project like tiling your home. I am.

Rainbow Rose: Not true, but still interesting
Setup: Red, green, and blue dyes. Divide the rose stem into three parts. Use plastic wrap to keep the stems comfortable.
Dye: Danish. Green is very opaque, red is slightly transparent, and blue is transparent. I believe these are real pigments, not just dyes.
After 18 hours – blue spots. After 36 hours – more blue spots appear on the petals and leaves. Closes after 36 hours – the rose is not happy.
